2016年里约奥运，出现首支“无国籍”队伍，他们是群逃离自己战乱的家园而组成的“难民奥运队”（Refugee Olymipic Team)，由43名准奥运选手中选出6女4男运动员，分别来自南苏丹、叙利亚、刚果民主共和国和埃塞尔比亚。他们将参加田径、游泳和柔道等项目。
这支“难民奥运队”以奥运五环旗为“国旗”、奥运会会歌为“国歌”，他们参赛不为了“国家荣誉”，他们仅代表自己，以原始“奥运精神”对和平的追求。
