Huawei to announce smartphone more expensive than iPhone 7

Recent reports have suggested that Huawei is set to release the newest iteration of its flagship Mate series smartphone this coming November that will cost more than the iPhone 7.

A leaked report by Mobile blogger Evan Blass said that Huawei’s newest release will come in two versions, the Mate 9 and the Mate 9 pro.

The report also showed that the Mate 9 will come with a 5.9 inch flat screen display while the Mate 9 Pro will feature a dual-edge curved screen.

The Mate 9 will have a 64-bit, eight-core HI Silicon Kirin 960 system-on-a-chip processor and feature home buttons with fingerprint recognition.

It will also have a 2K QHD display, 4 GB worth of RAM and 64 GB to 256 GB worth of internal storage for you to choose from, and run on an Android 7.0 operating system software. The Mate 9 will also continue to feature Leica’s dual-lens camera, similar to Huawei’s previous luxury smartphone, the P9.

While Huawei featured the same dual lens technology in its previous Honor flagship series. Other industrial players like LG and HTC similarly have similarly introduced dual lens cameras. But the value of the dual lens was only truly perfected after the release of P9’s Leica dual lens and the latest iPhone 7.

Though the cost is yet to be confirmed, it is rumoured to be priced above the newest Apple iPhone7.

The move would be consistent with market figures produced by research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), Huawei recorded a 9.3% increase in its Q2 2016 global smartphone market share. It is now the world’s no. 3 smartphone maker, trailing only just behind Samsung and Apple.

Apple’s market share slipped 3.7% from its Q1 record of 11.7% while tech complications with Samsung’s Note 7 battery has led to a total recall of its devices.

Huawei’s aggressive technological research and development have been widely hailed by tech critics and economists alike, with the establishment of 52 research and innovation centres aimed at the further development of the technology in its devices.

Huawei has also been highly successful in capturing the Malaysian market, taking top spot with 40.3% of the RM2, 000 – RM2, 500 range smartphone market share.

The P9, Huawei’s latest smartphone featuring the dual Leica lens release prior to the upcoming Mate 9 has sold more than 100,000 units in Malaysia.
