Over the past decade, Malaysia has witnessed a dramatic increase in the prevalence of mental disorder. Two years on, the pandemic is far from over. As we continue to adjust to life in a new normal, many stressors persist. We now have to cope with:

  • Inflation – everything seems to cost more now
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Concerns about the future
  • Fast-paced living
  • Emerging infectious diseases

Several policy reforms in the past decade have led to advances in the Malaysian mental health system. Unfortunately, there remain many obstacles in the delivery of accessible and affordable mental healthcare.

Malaysia had a significant deficit of psychiatrists and psychologists. We have just 1.27 psychiatrists per 100,000 population (as at 2018) vs. World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation of 1 per 10,000!

The Ministry of Health aims to raise...

Thankfully, the Ministry of Health aims to raise this ratio to 1 psychiatrist per 50,000 by 2025, and 1 per 30,000 by 2030.

Only 20% of Malaysians with a mental disorder seek out professional care

It is estimated that only 20% of Malaysians with a mental disorder will seek out professional care. Why? Social stigma, mostly, due to lack of awareness and misconceptions about mental illness.

Suicide cases almost doubled on average across all age groups...

Suicide cases almost doubled on average across all age groups in the first five months of 2021 (94/month) compared with 2019 (51/month). Alarmingly, 51% of the 1,708 suicide cases between January 2019 and May 2021 were of teenagers aged 15-18.

What is mental health and wellness?

Mental health is just as important as physical health – we need both to achieve overall wellness and quality of life. Unfortunately, we tend to overlook the importance of mental wellness, and often take it for granted.

Mental health is the foundation for our emotions, thinking, communication, learning, resilience and self-esteem. Our mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Indeed, good mental health is key to healthy relationships, good personal and emotional well-being, and our ability to contribute to community or society.

Do note that although often used interchangeably, poor mental health and mental illness are not the same.

Mental health involves effective functioning in daily activities. If you have good mental health, you are productive (work, school, caregiving), have healthy relationships, and able to adapt to change and cope with adversity.

Mental illness

Mental illness refers collectively to all diagnosable mental disorders. Common mental illnesses are depression, bipolar disorder, post-partum depression, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorders etc.

Someone suffering from a mental illness experiences significant changes in thinking, emotion and/or behaviour, and typically has problems functioning in social, work or family settings.

Alas, many people who have a mental illness do not want to talk about it due to social stigma. But mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. It is a medical condition, just like heart disease or diabetes. And mental health conditions are treatable. The vast majority of individuals with mental illness continue to function in their daily lives.

Break the stigma

If you have mental health issues, don’t suffer in silence.
