Skyrocketing Malaysian Cancer Rates

Skyrocketing Malaysian Cancer Rates

Malaysian cancer numbers have been seeing a year on year increase according to Malaysian National Cancer registry.

Cancer is currently the third most common cause of death in Malaysia, following circulatory system disease and respiratory diseases, accounting for close to 14% of deaths in Malaysian ministry of health hospitals.

People diagnosed with cancer

cancer go completely unrecorded

Nearly 40,000 people are recorded to be diagnosed with cancer every year, and it’s estimated that another 10,000 cases of cancer go completely unrecorded. One in four Malaysians will likely be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 75.

Billions of dollars have been poured into cancer research and the scientific community have unanimously declared that the only way to decrease the risk of cancer is through making healthy lifestyle choices and being consistent in their implementation.

AIA Vitality rewards those who live healthy lifestyles and protect themselves against the dangers of cancer with tips like these

Eat More Plant-Based Food

I’m Ms. Filter, your liver

There isn’t a miracle cure-all food that one can eat to prevent or fight cancer on its own. However, a veggie and fruit based diet can help lower your risk for many types of cancer.

These foods are rich in nutrients that can boost your immune system and help protect against cancer cells. Fruits and vegetables are great sources of antioxidants like vitamin C and E that ensure the cells in your body function properly.

Plant based diets are also high in fiber, which can help you cleanse your digestive tract, moving cancer-causing compounds before they can create harm. This mainly prevents digestive cancers such as colo-rectal, larynx and stomach cancer.

Less Sugary Drinks, More Green Tea

I’m Ms. Filter, your liver

Sugar filled beverages have been ingrained into the Malaysian culture as much as not using a signal light and fake accents. But sugar has been known to contribute to the development of cancer cells.

Instead, stay home and brew a cup of green tea, because the chemical makeup of green tea blocks the formation of new blood vessels that cancer cells need to feed themselves with.

Green tea also boosts the immune system, triggering enzymes in our body that helps to protect against cancer cell formation.

Amp up the cardio

I’m Mr. Fresh, your lungs

Regular physical activity can help the digestive system, leading to regular bowel movements. This can cause cancerous substances in undigested food to pass through the bowels quickly.

Exercise can also decrease inflammation of the bowels. While inflammation of the bowels is a normal occurrence, cancer cells are created when mutations occur during the multiplication process, and inflammation can cause the cell multiplication process to happen too quickly,  leaving for more room for mutation.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women and scientists have linked it to  the overabundance of oestrogen. Exercise decreases the amount of oestrogen in a woman’s body, and studies have found that women who exercise have a 30 to 40 percent lower risk of breast cancer.

I’m Mr. Fresh, your lungs

I’m Mr. Tum, your tummy

Don’t stuff yourself

I’m Mr. Tum, your tummy

20% of all cancers are found to be caused by obesity according to the world cancer research fund. In fact, body fatness has one of the strongest links to cancers of the breast, colon, esophagus, kidney and pancreas.

Whether directly or indirectly, being overweight unquestionably contributes to the risk of cancer by weakening a persons immune system and making him or her unable to fend off the growing cancerous cells.

While prevention is always better than a cure, we should also stay safe by protecting ourselves against the risks of cancer.

A-Life Cancer 360 is a complete cancer protection plan that provides coverage throughout all stages of cancer, when paired together with AIA Vitality, customers will be awarded with a 50% yearly cash bonus!

How music affects our health

How music affects our health

How Music Affects Our Health

Praise Maukazuva, 14 February 2017

Most people think that music is just music or that it is just a catchy rhythm or beat to dance to, or something to keep you company when you are alone or bored. And then there are people who distaste music completely, as they think it affects them negatively and give them negative thoughts.

To lesser extent these facts are true. But did you know that music actually affect our health in a highly positive way. It is amazing how it can actually enhance certain functions of the brain and how it can evoke the deepest emotions in people, to be able to process fear, grief, sadness and resentment.

First of all, playing is the brain equivalent of a full body workout. It keeps the brain healthy especially as it ages resulting in better memory and mental sharpness. Yes! Music helps you regain your memory. This is because while listening to it, you can actually picture an old memory from that day it was playing. Like I said, it is truly amazing.

Next up, we have the impacts on the heart, pulse rate and also blood pressure. According to the reports from the Massachusetts General Hospital Patients that listened to music 30 minutes a day had lower blood pressure, slower pulse rate compared to the ones that did not. So not only does music strengthen the heart it actually helps with faster recovery in heart disease.

Another music therapy was carried out at Mayo Clinic in Florida. It was part of the Healing Enhancement Program, where patients would listen to music before, during and after a heart surgery. The clinic worked with Chip Davis the leader of the rock music, Mannheim Steamroller.

Below is a video of Chip Davis talking about music therapy and how he gathered nature sounds for patients to ease their pain.

The quality of sleep you get depends on heart rates, and because music helps slow down the heart rate, we can get a good quality of sleep, sleeping patterns. So a sweet sounding song can be good just before you sleep.

Music is one of the good sources of motivation in your life. We all know that we get a good feeling from listening to music. But what exactly will be happening to the brain during that time. The brain is releasing a chemical called “dopamine”. This chemical reduces chronic stress by lowering stress hormones that contribute to mental distress. The release of this chemical also helps with pain management, for example during surgeries or even giving birth!

When you have a brain damage, the brain finds a pathway that will make re-function properly again, music on the other hand helps in creating that pathway thereby making the brain re-function properly.

There is strong evidence that listening to music or even playing a musical instrument such as the piano can have a positive impact on your health and brain function. It helps you improve your mood, enhance learning and concentration.

The above video shows us how music has changed Henry’s life. Henry had been admitted to a hospital for 10 years, and after being introduced to music he has remembered who he is and has reacquired his identity.

So what are you waiting for? Fill your life with some daily dose of Taylor Swift or any any artist of your choice now!

“I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from everyone loves music.”

The number of gout patients is on the rise, especially often seen in the middle aged men. The outbreak usually starts at the lower limb joints (especially the big toes and knees), which causing swelling, redness, burning pain and other symptoms which attack repeatedly and produce severe pain.

When uric acid concentration exceeds the normal level, it forms as sodium salt and deposits into the joints, soft tissues, cartilages and kidneys, creating tissue inflammatory reactions which are the main cause of gout. If not treated early and completely, things will be getting worse with joint swelling, deformity, stiffness and nodules before becoming kidney stones, renal failure, coronary heart disease, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, urinary tract stones and other organ dysfunction, all which will pose a serious threat to the patient’s life.

Although gout cases are not reported frequently, there are far more patients than you might believe. The most well known one is Hong Kong entertainer Eric Tsang, who was previously photographed using a wheelchair to move around because he couldn’t use his legs. It’s later confirmed that his love for drinking was what caused him to suffer from gout in the first place.

Malaysian chef Ismail Ahmad also suffered from gout and used it as inspiration for his cooking. Since then, he has made big changes in his restaurant’s menu, reducing meat and increasing vegetables so that the customers are able to enjoy a healthy and delicious dining experience.

In fact, cases of gout often occur all around us, but reports on this topic are limited. Furthermore, general public tends to ignore it simply because they have very little knowledge about gout. If we continue to ignore this illness and remain ignorant of how serious it is, society will eventually be filled with gout sufferers.

Defeating gout is something that we need to start as soon as possible. If you or your loved ones are feeling symptoms of gout, you should seek immediate medical attention in order to deal with this illness before it can get too far.

You could be suffering from gout too!

You could be suffering from gout too!

Also known as metabolic arthritis, gout is caused when a person’s metabolism weakens, resulting in excess uric acid that it is unable to excrete normally or efficiently. This harmful uric acid is deposited into the human joints and after some time forms uric acid crystals and causes a gout flare-up.

This disease is most often seen in middle aged males. In beginning stages, the pain doesn’t last long and usually disappear by itself in a few days. However, this is only the beginning of the agony.

Gout has 4 stages in total – hyperuricemia(asymptomatic gout), early stage(acute gout), mid stage(inter-critical gout) and late stage(chronic tophaceous gout). In the earlier stage, there are no clinical symptoms of gout besides a high blood uric acid value. As such, most patients are unaware of or choose to ignore even found this symptoms. After that, the pain will begin to attack the patient’s joints, usually starting at the big toe which starts to swell painfully along with redness, warmth and tenderness. The piercing knife-like pain is so strong that makes the patient always has sleepless nights.

At the mid stage, also known as inter-critical gout, the pain will spread to the fingers, toes, wrist, ankle, knee and other parts of the body. Then, the surrounding soft tissue and bone will also be affected with varying degrees of damage and dysfunction. As the crystallization continues to build up, it slowly forms stone-like structures called “tophi”.  At this point, the kidney’s performance will begin to deteriorate.

In the end, tophi will increase continuously to the point that it can easily rupture out of the crystals, resulting in serious deformity and dysfunction of the patient’s joints. This can severely affect the patient’s daily life as they will be in constant pain. In addition, the urate constantly deposited into the kidney which will eventually turn into kidney stones, causing problems like edema, oliguria, proteinuria, nocturia, high blood pressure, anemia and more. The kidneys will be damaged and begin to deteriorate, leading to kidney failure which can be life threatening for the patient.

Gout: More common in men than in women?

Gout: More common in men than in women?

According to statistics by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) of the United States, 275 in every 100,000 people suffer from gout. It is predicted that in the year 2021, there would be 17.7 million people suffer from gout globally. This alarming figure truly warrants a call for increased health awareness!

When it comes to gout, we should remember the Chinese idiom: “illness enters by the mouth”. One of the main culprits is excessive eating and drinking habits. Excessive consumption of foods high in purines such as seafood, meat, alcohol and beans, significantly increase the density of uric acid in the body. Making it worse, lack of exercise also causes uric acid remain in the body instead of being properly excreted. Over a long period of time, excessive uric acid build-up can lead to the formation of uric acid crystal deposits, which are the “culprits” of gout.

You may not be aware that gout, obesity, hypertension (high blood pressure), hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease and diabetes are all closely related. For example, patients with hypertension commonly use diuretics to control their blood pressure levels, but which leads to extracellular fluid loss. This in turn increases the reabsorption of urates by kidney tubules. Chronic hypertension triggers atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), which results in renal function deterioration (kidney failure) and decreases uric acid excretion. This simply translates into the increase of uric acid concentration, which leading to gout attacks.

For overweight people, the major culprit is overeating, which leads to the accumulation excess fats in the subcutaneous, abdominal and visceral parts of the body. When the body is tired or hungry, it burns the stored fat to generate energy (calories) to support the body movement. The problem is that whenever the body burns fat for energy, it also produces ketones which prevents the excretion of uric acid. This causes the hyperuricemia levels that triggers gout attacks.

Statistically speaking, Malaysia is the most obese country in Southeast Asia. Out of 30.3 million Malaysians, 12 million people (40%) are overweight, with more than 5.1 million (17% to 18%) suffering from human obesity. This obviously makes Malaysia the fattest country in Southeast Asia. This number increases yearly, meaning that more and more people are becoming vulnerable to metabolic problems such as gout.

Most gout patients are men over the age of 30. However, due to unhealthy lifestyles and bad eating habits, gout victims are getting younger and younger, with clinical studies showing that there are now gout patients as young as 20. The proportion of men and women suffering from gout is around 9: 1, though postmenopausal women are more vulnerable. In any case, the risk of gout occurring will increase with higher uric acid concentration, which is something that affects both men and women.

In order to prevent gout, according to doctor’s health tips, we should do our best to have a healthy lifestyle and diet. Avoid food that is high in purine (organ meats, beer, etc.), drink plenty of water daily, and exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight.

What’s Gout? Can we prevent it?

What’s Gout? Can we prevent it?

Even though living standards have improved, the percentage of gout sufferers has actually increased!

Based on statistics surveyed, for the past 15 years, the number of people infected with gout worldwide has increased between 15-30 times. In the United Kingdom, the number of gout sufferers has risen by 60% from 1997 to 2012. Based on current rates, it is predicted that by 2021 there will be 17.7 million gout sufferers globally.

In the past, gout was relatively rare in the Asia region. However, since the 1990s, nations like Japan, Taiwan, China and even Malaysia went through rapid economic development which significantly improved living standards for the common citizen as well as increasing the amount of meat in their diet. This excessive meat consumption is a major factor in the rising number of hyperuricemia diseases. Unfortunately, given the absence of obvious symptoms in hyperuricemia, such cases are often misdiagnosed. When gout-induced attacks on the joints surface a few years later, the organ damage has already been done.

Excessive consumption of foods high in purine such as seafood, meat, alcohol and beans causes the density of uric acid in the body to increase significantly. Without regular exercise to excrete it, uric acid crystal deposits will form, triggering gout attacks. About 20%-30% of the uric acid in the body are ingested from the food we eat while the remaining 80% are produced by our body’s waste. Therefore, one of the main factors for gout are bad eating or drinking habits (binge eating or drinking) which stimulates and accelerates the harmful accumulation of uric acid.

Gout is the most severe form of arthritis, causing immense pain to those who have it. For many people, the first sign of gout is usually pain in the big toe joint, caused by the sharp uric acid crystals deposited there. A gout attack comes in the form of a sharp, stabbing or tingling pain, accompanied by redness, fever and swelling symptoms. Acute gout attacks often occur at night when the immune system is going through the detoxification process. The pain often causes sufferers to have difficulty sleeping. Without proper medication, the gout attacks will occur continuously, with 60% of gout sufferers experiencing a second episode within a year.

Gout brings tremendous suffering that greatly affects the patient’s daily life. In severe cases, it may even result in death. To prevent gout, you should practise healthy eating habits – cut down on alcohol, drink plenty of water and exercise regularly. If you are diagnosed with hyperuricemia, it may be a sign that gout already is already creeping up to you! Gout may be crowned as the “Emperor Disease”, but it affects everyone equally.
