MACC Man Heads to Comedy Contest

Jason Leong, newcomer stand-up artist and a member of the Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians (MACC) is competing for a spot in the finals of the Funniest person in the world competition.

The local comic is up against other top comedians in the running for a spot in the finals, if he wins, he will be flown to Helsinki, Finland to represent Malaysia on one of the biggest comedic platforms in the world.

“I want to bring glory to Malaysia like how our Olympic and Paralympic athletes did. All these things matter so much to me. For me, it will be a way to give back to a country which has given me so much.”

Jason is also a certified doctor who was educated in the University College Dublin

The medical officer cum funnyman abandoned his job at the Selayang Hospital to pursue his passion of being a full-time comic.

“From the moment I wake up until the moment I sleep, everything that happens in between are things I want to do, not because my boss tells me to.”

Jason says of his decision to leave the medical profession after years of practice.

Jason has never shied away from political incorrectness, delivering racially and politically laced punchlines in most of his shows.

“Stand-up comedy is an art form that holds a mirror to society. And unfortunately, nowadays, our politics, our politicians, and our political parties are a bit of a joke themselves.”

Since resigning from his profession in the medical industry, Jason has been working as a full-time comedian, starring in corporate videos while also honing his craft by performing every week in various comedy clubs.

In 2014, he became the first Malaysian comedian ever to perform a professional set at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood, USA, the birthplace of world famous headliners such as Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy and other established names in the comedic industry.

The Malaysian Dream, as described by young adults

The Malaysian Dream, as described by young adults

The Malaysian Dream,
As Described By Young Adults

From left to right: Chong, Anne, Ai Jia and Ruwan

Anne, Chong, Ruwan and Ai Jia are four friends who perfectly embody the Malaysian spirit. They’ve been friends since they were in school and plan to be for years to come. Though they all went to different universities and live very different lives now, they still make efforts to meet up weekly to spend some quality time together while reminiscing about the old times.
A location that is a favourite of theirs is the Bangsar Sports Complex.

The Bangsar Sports Complex

One day each week, usually during the weekends, Anne, Chong, Ruwan and Ai Jia, go to the complex and spend the day there trying to keep active.

Days at the complex for them usually include a large array of sporting activities including badminton, tennis, futsal and swimming. The four of them had first met when they were on the track team together in school so it is no surprise that fitness is still a priority to them.

But perhaps the most beautiful thing about their friendship is how perfectly it embodies the Malaysian Dream.

What makes Malaysia Malaysia is its diversity and the ability of the people to live harmoniously despite the population being a Rojak of different races and religions.

Watching the four friends as they spend time together at the complex serves as the perfect visualisation of what we Malaysians dream of. Race has never been a barrier for them and they believe it never will.

“I feel like you shouldn’t have a barrier between people of different races,” says Ai Jia. “When you take down that barrier, you make more friends. You have more chances of finding people who click with you. Most of my close friends are people of different races. If I didn’t have friends of different races, I wouldn’t have as many close friends.”

“We don’t see each other as different races, but just as friends,” Chong adds.

They prove that cultural and ethnic differences do not matter nearly as much as the people themselves.

“I feel lucky to be in a country with so many different races. We always make sure to respect each other. That is the key to staying united. We can exchange cultures, ideas, food, stories…and best of all, we get holidays for every festival!” Anne exclaims.

“Every time it’s Chinese New Year, I’ll go to Chong’s house and get free Ang Pau. Hari Raya also I’ll be going to Anne’s house,” says Ruwan.

The Bangsar Sports Complex is to the four friends, what old homes or schools are to most people. We all have that one place we share with our best of friends that puts a smile on our face just thinking about it. Though it might seem like a dodgy, old sports centre to some, intense memories are felt as soon as the four of them walk in.

Their little tradition started when they were about seventeen when Ruwan’s father suggested they spend their weekends doing something other than lounging around at Starbucks. The friends agreed and so began what has now become a weekly ritual that will probably never be broken. They say that their weekly meetups bring with it a warm and fuzzy feeling that could never be replicated anywhere else.

The Swimming Pool

The Badminton Court

A typical day for them at the sports club usually involves a heated game of badminton. Though a doubles match might seem ideal, they prefer having one pair play singles while the other stands by the side to keep score. They laughed, when explaining that, most of the time, the pair standing by the side would cheer for the other and get so into the game that the score was almost always forgotten.

The Tennis Court

As much as things have changed for Anne, Chong, Ruwan and Ai Jia, spending time at the Bangsar Sports Complex never fails to make them realize that they are, in fact, not that different from who they were in school. Yes, they’ve grown up, matured, and started to focus on their careers, but one thing that will never change is how much they care about each other.

Sepang International Circuit is set to host the 18th edition of the Formula One PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix, themed Experience Redef1ned, at the Sepang International Circuit from 30 September until 2 October 2016.

The event will also feature Usher, who will headline the F1 Malaysia Grand Prix’s signature after-race concert. Usher, who is taking the stage with several Malaysian artistes from the Universal Music label, will join a long line of previous international stars who have performed in the after-race concerts such as Calvin Harris, Guns N’ Roses, and Girls Generation.

“We want to encourage families to make the F1 a weekend outing and also nurture more young F1 fans,”

said Sepang International Circuit CEO Dato’ Razlan Razali.

Two Malaysians, Nabil Jeffri, 22, and Akash Neil Nandy, 19, will take the spotlight, racing with international teams at the F1 Malaysia Grand Prix.

Nabil was the youngest ever driver to test a Formula 1 racing car. This year, he will be competing in the GP2 series and is racing with British team Arden International. As a 16-year-old, he carried out an aerodynamic test for the Lotus Racing Formula One team, and so became the youngest ever driver to test a Formula 1 car.

Akash Neil Nandy will be competing in GP3 series with the Swiss team Jenzer Motorsports. Akash is a recipient of the prestigious 2016 McMillan Woods Rising Star Award in the Chequered Flag of the Year category.

This is the first time Sepang is hosting both the GP2 and GP3 support races.

Besides the after-race concert, there will also be an extensive activity line-up that will take place throughout the three days for the whole family. The XTrack experience is created for all ages to explore motorsports-related activities such as drifting, karting, a kids’ driving school and so much more – and this can be accessed with the same race ticket purchased. Other fan favourites include a driver’s autograph session, a fan forum with the drivers, an air show, a supercar showcase, a classic car display and various shopping opportunities.

The F1 Malaysia Grand Prix was first held in the Sepang International Circuit in 1999. The event marked Michael Schumacher’s return to racing after an absence due to a broken leg. He came in second, finishing after his teammate, Eddie Irvine.

The event is watched by fans worldwide and receives a large viewership, with television ratings soaring to new highs. In 2015, NBCSN’s live coverage of the event was the most-watched overnight F1 race on cable in 18 years, averaging around 384,000 viewers.

The event is also set to attract a much larger younger audience as this year. With performances by stars like Usher and the exciting family-oriented activities planned, fans of all ages will be thrilled to attend the event.
