Not until you taste these authentic Hakka dishes…

Not until you taste these authentic Hakka dishes…

Not until you taste these authentic Hakka dishes…

I frequent the Big Big Bowl Hakka Kitchen in Desa Aman Puri, whenever I feel like eating their Hakka Lui Cha for a healthy change.

Famous and once featured on 8TV Ho Chak! for its Lui Cha, not many people know that the Big Big Bowl is, in fact, well known for its home-cooked Hakka dishes. When I say it is home-cooked food, I really mean it!

It is cooked by 63-year-old Nancy Choo and her daughter, Angie Lim. They painstakingly prepare the dishes from the raw ingredients and do not use preservatives here. Even the colouring for the rice used for Lui Cha as an alternative to the brown rice is natural.

Most of the ingredients such as the noodles, fishballs and yam abacus seeds are homemade. It is time consuming to prepare just the ingredients, but for the mother-and-daughter team, it is something that they believe is still the best where food is concerned!

When I first checked out this restaurant for its Hakka lui cha about a year ago, to me, it was like a hidden gem waiting to be re-discovered. My greatest attraction here is, in fact, the Lui Cha.

I am Hokkien and my wife is Hakka, but she never liked Lui Cha until she tried out the Hakka heritage here at the Big Big Bowl. One reason is because the soup has a good balance of basil and mint that even my nine-year-old son often competes with me for the soup.

My wife’s regular orders, like mine, is the Lui Cha set without the rice and I would usually finish the whole bowl of the Lui Cha soup before even eating the eight different ingredients. If I could lick it the bowl (which I do not for good table manners), I would!

Change of Location

It was in Bukit Maluri when Ho Chak! team visited them in January last year, but after finding the place too congested, they decided to move a second time to quieter area in Desa Aman Puri. Business slowed down slightly but not for long.

Lim’s own regular clients managed to find out that they had moved here through their Facebook. My brief mention about the restaurant in an articlze in Voiz Asia in January this year also did help them with their business, but it was a bigger boost when Lim’s mother Nancy decided to join force with her daughter.

Nancy was operating a stall separately for over 15 years and had her own regular clients during lunch hours. It was hers and Lim’s Hakka dishes that when my “foodie” friend and I checked out during the food review that truly mesmerized us.

Recommended Dishes

Besides their Hakka Lui Cha with its ‘Taste Just Nice’ soup for me, we both agreed that there are at least four signature dishes that should be their bestsellers.

The Lemon Grass Kampung chicken has the “ooooumph” because they use three different types of ginger nicely blended to give it a great taste. A slight chili padi was great to make the dish spicy but surprisingly, my children love it too. I would give this dish my thumbs-up.

Their Claypot Rice Wine Kampung Chicken dish (RM 20.50, enough for two persons) using traditional home-brewed wine and Bentong ginger is also another great dish to try out with their purple rice served with sesame seeds.

Children also like this dish and their Braised Pork Ribs (a claypot for 2 person at RM 18.00) because the tauchiew used to braise the pork ribs. It is the way they prepare that make the pork ribs tender and tastes great. For the pork ribs, they do not use any tenderiser.

For those who usually crave for the vinegar pork trotters, Lim says that they use only pork knuckles to give it the nice texture and Bentong ginger to give the fragrance and taste of ginger that most, in fact, not only the pregnant mothers but my foodie friend and I love it a lot! A claypot of the Vinegar Trotters (RM 18) is sufficient for two persons.

It would not do justice if I do not add a fifth dish – the hand-prepared Yam Abacus Seeds (a portion for two persons, RM15) which is also another famous Hakka cuisine. You can order this just to eat as a desert or even as a starter.

Their fish balls use ikan parang or the wolf herring. To keep the fishball fresh, they only immerse the fishballs in salt water. They do not use any preservatives. Each order is a minimum of 10 fish balls in a bowl at RM9.

The Hakka clan cannot go without the Yong Tau Foo served in soup (minimum order 5 pieces at RM1.60). “For the food paste, we also use a blend of Indo-Pacific King Mackerel (ikan tenggiri papan) and wolf herring (ikan parang) to give it a nice smooth taste to it,” she explains.

For individuals who walk into Big Big Bowl, my suggestions are to try their Fish Head or Fish Paste Mai Fun, Lei Cha Pan Mee, Cha Cheong Pan Mee (choose either green or the ordinary noodles), curry pan mee and some of the claypot dishes above. “The only dish that we do not do it for single diners is the Rice Wine Chicken,” says Lim.

Tap Your Way to an Uber Lifestyle – It’s Simple

Tap Your Way to an Uber Lifestyle – It’s Simple

In Malaysian cities, urbanites are always on the go; whether it’s zipping to a business meeting by day, rolling up in style to the hottest hangout on a Saturday night, or mall-hopping during the weekend. However, in getting their way around, locals and tourists sometimes come up against traffic jams, a lack of interconnectivity for public transit, overcrowding and expensive charges (for parking, tolls or fuel).

Since launching in Malaysia more than three years ago, the Uber app has sparked a change in how Malaysia moves.

However, many have yet to embrace the the idea of simply pushing a button and getting a ride. This is why we are focused on creating opportunities to offer people a first try. With Uber, you can simply press a button and choose where you want to go, when you want to go, and in what kind of vehicle you want to go in. This probably doesn’t make sense to you until you’ve experienced the magic of having choice at the touch of a button.

Want to try Uber? Here’s how:

1. How do I download the Uber app?

The Uber app is available FOR FREE on both iOS and Android. Just open up the Apple Store or Google Play and download the app.

2. How do I create an account?

Enter a valid email address and phone number. Once you’ve completed the signup process, a code will be sent to verify your phone number. Verify your account and you’re ready to ride!

3. Where to?

Tap “Where to?” and key in your destination. You’ll have the option to take either an uberX, uberXL or uberBLACK with the fare for each stated there. uberX gives you the most affordable choice for a ride for 1-4 people. For bigger groups of up to 6 people, choose uberXL. And if you feel like splurging a little more once in awhile on a fancy ride – opt for uberBLACK. Remember – the fare you see is the fare you pay, unless you divert from the route. You can also add your favourite or frequent destinations as bookmarks, and that saves you time – instead of selecting that location again and again.

4. Hey… where’s my car?

When your ride is on the way, your driver’s name, car number plate and contact number will be shared immediately. All this helps you know who your driver is. Once in a while, you may encounter a hearing-impaired driver partner. The app will let you know in advance so that when you get on your ride, you’ll be able to sign a “Hello” instead of saying it. That helps, doesn’t it? Just simply check that all details are right when your driver arrives, and you’ll soon be on your way!

5. Oh my… wrong location!

We understand that sometimes you’re in a hurry and may accidentally put in the wrong location. Or if you change your mind on where you want to go, and have that “Oops!” moment and want to change your destination. The good news is… you can! Did you think that was not possible with Uber? We did say we understand you. To change your location, select “Edit” next to your pickup location and key in the new location or drag the pin to a preferred location within the grey circle on the map. Once done, tap the “Confirm” button. Do note, however, there might be a fare increase when you change locations depending on the route, distance and time.

6. How was your ride?

Every rider is valuable to us and that’s why we want to know how your ride went after every trip that you take. You can do so by sharing your rating and feedback in the app itself. This automatically pops up when your trip ends and you can select between 1-5 stars for each driver. And here’s the thing – your driver will rate you too after every trip. We want the Uber experience to be great for both you and your driver. So, remember when you’re riding, ride safe, ride nice!

7. How do I pay?

You can pay for your Uber with both credit card or cash. Select “Payment” from your app menu and add credit card or cash to your payment method, and whichever you select will appear as the preferred payment method automatically.

More #PROTips

The Uber app was designed around YOU. There are additional features you will find useful, which you probably haven’t thought about.

➔ Can I share my whereabouts?

Yes, you can. Simply click on “Share Status” in the app and a real-time map of your route together with the estimated time of arrival will be shared to the contact number you select. Those that receive your ETA can track your journey in real time. And let’s hope you get that grand welcome… or just simply, see your loved ones breathe that sigh of relief, knowing you arrived safely.

➔ Can I book a ride ahead of time?

Sometimes, you want to plan your day ahead of time so that you’ll be punctual for your appointment. For example, if you’re heading to the airport and you know you’ve got to be there a couple of hours before take off. Now, that is a ride you do not want to miss – we surely don’t want you to miss your flight. Hence why Uber also has this special feature called “Schedule a Ride”. This means that with Uber, you can request a ride between 15 minutes to 30 days in advance of your actual intended pickup time. On top of choosing a date, you can also choose a specific pickup time. This function appears as an icon of a car with a clock next to the “Request” button.

➔ Multiple Destinations

With Multiple Destinations, launched recently, riders can now add up to 3 stops. Whether you’re sharing a ride with your friend en route to the airport, or going home after dinner and need to drop off the party on the way, it’s easier than ever to pick up and drop off your friends and family members along the way.

➔ Request for Guests/Loved Ones

Seniors are concerned about losing their mobility as they age, and their loved ones can feel overwhelmed when managing the senior’s transportation needs. So, we’ve definitely been thinking about ways to make our app more accessible to everyone in the family. Making it easier for our users to request or schedule rides for others and keep track of their journey in real time is certainly a great way to start.

➔ 24/7 support

If you need help at any point before, during or after your trip, we want you to know that Uber has a support team that operates round-the- clock every day. You can reach the support team within the app itself – that saves you the hassle of emailing or making a phone call. With the in-app support, rest assured we’ll be able to help you with your query in the quickest time possible. Uber is available in Malaysia in 15 cities – Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Penang, Ipoh, Seremban, Batu Pahat, Langkawi, Melaka, Kuala Terengganu, Kuantan, Alor Setar, Kuching, Miri, Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan.

Uber is connecting Malaysians one ride at a time.

We believe that every trip is a journey and every journey is a story worth sharing. In conjunction with Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day, we want to celebrate the common thread that links us – being Malaysian, through our #UBERLAGU initiative. So while on a trip with us, record yourself singing a song that, for you, truly defines being Malaysian. It could be any song – we want to see how creative you can get. You stand a chance of winning RM600 worth of Uber credits, so don’t be shy, get singing!

Most importantly, try something good today! It’s time for you to Cuba Uber!

#UberLagu Contest ends on 16 September 2017

Comment:  His grandfather used to work as a chef for the British during World War II, his father was a chef with a number of Chinese restaurants in Segamat, Johor, and now a third-generation Wong Choon Cheh operates his own dream restaurant at Taman KIP.

The 31-year-old chef has been involved in the restaurant business since 2004, when he was still helping out at his mother’s porridge business in Desa Aman Puri.

In 2010, Wong started his own restaurant in the same neighbourhood, but after a few years, he decided to move to KIP where he has been operating since 2015.

“We have regular clients who come all the way from different parts of the Klang Valley.”

During lunch hours, they come here for the fried claypot porridge served with yam, pork and sliced squid, which is a best seller especially on a hot day. During the weekends, they come back with their families to check out Wong’s other specialities.

“This is something that I have inherited from my own grandfather”

Although it may be slightly hard to locate for people who are living in other parts of the Klang Valley, it is value for money. Besides, with Waze these days, it is not difficult to find the place.

His signature dish worth trying out is Wong’s special Claypot Rice Wine Tilapia fish served with clams. “This is something that I have inherited from my own grandfather,” he said. “Most of my clients come here for the dish before they like the way the fish is prepared.”

The fish is about RM4 for 100 grams but if served with clams, the whole dish is estimated at RM40 ++.

Wong’s Paku Thai Style vegetable salad is another dish that is popular which is served cold with a homemade Thai sauce. “We use ginger flower (bunga Kantan) and lemon grass to prepare the sauce,” he said.

There is also the famous chilli prawn taufu from Kuala Selangor which can be served either as steamed or deep fried taufu ala Teochew style. It is slightly spicy, but children, even as young as six years old, love it.

Then there is the sesame chicken which is usually marianated overnight with ginger and salt before it is deepfried and peppered with sesame seeds before it is served to the guests either as half or a full chicken.

Check out their Facebook Xin Xin Yong Hoe for more information. Restaurant Yong Hoe is located at Persiaran KIP Utama, KIP (waze location: https://waze.to/lr/hw2860pkfj) and is open six days a week from 11am – 2.30pm (lunch) and 5.30pm for dinner with a last dish at 9.30pm. They are closed on Mondays.
