Getting around Georgetown with doorstep advantages

Getting around Georgetown with doorstep advantages

Travel within the heart of Georgetown at your convenience

Why crack your head when you have all the doorstep comforts and conveniences? Choose the right hotel in the right location, half the trip is well planned out! This rings true when you have a Penang trip in mind. Be it a day trip, weekend trip of a few days, or something longer, you can always save yourself time and hassle being a productive traveller with a more enjoyable experience to look forward to.

Don’t compromise on hotel location

When you have lots of delicious Penang food to savour and so much more to explore, don’t waste time staying at a place far away from popular tourist attractions. Get cozied up to a nearby place where everything is accessible within a 5-km radius especially when most of the attractions are located within Georgetown. And this is where Sunway Hotel Georgetown sits comfortably.

Knowing that traffic is a big concern for visiting popular tourist attractions around Penang, staying at a nearby hotel is a right move to start with. Georgetown alone is home to a long list of attractions from culture to adventure, history to art, food to shopping, lifestyle and sightseeing. The UNESCO World Heritage Site attracts both Malaysians and foreigners from all over the world, mind you.

Hawker food galore

Just about 100m across the street from the hotel is where the famous New Lane (Lorong Baru) foodstalls congregate. That’s an outright “convenient winner” for you to sample Penang’s iconic hawker food. Char Koay Teow, Chee Cheong Fun, Sotong Kangkong, Asam Laksa, Oh Chien (Fried Oyster Omelette), Curry Mee, Popiah or Leng Chee Kang, make your call.

Foodies would also find Restoran Nasi Padang Minang, Ah Leng Char Koay Teow, Nasi Kandar Beratur Original, Penang Road Asam Laksa, Penang Road Teochew Chendol and Beach Road Ali Nasi Lemak on their radar within a short, convenient distance. For durian lovers, satisfy your craving at Anson Road’s durian stalls. Stop by Ghee Hiang Local Specialties Shop too.

Penang has a wonderful assortment of museums to quench your thirst for knowledge and curiosity. For a start, Penang State Museum is just about 200m away from the hotel. Top up your list with Penang 5D Interactive World, Upside Down Museum, Chocolate & Coffee Museum, Made In Penang Interactive Museum, Penang Wonderfood Museum, Penang 3D Trick Art Museum, Penang Time Tunnel and Pinang Peranakan Mansion.

KOMTAR Skywalk

New attraction – KOMTAR Skywalk – is the talk of the town for what it literally means, which is merely 500m away from the hotel. Get your adrenaline all pumped up at nearly 250m high up in the sky on a glass walkway! Perched on the 68th floor of KOMTAR, formerly the tallest building in Malaysia, KOMTAR Skywalk feasts your eyes with a sweeping view of Georgetown’s cityscape and its surroundings from seaside to Penang Hill.  Feel free to soak up more “lofty air” at Sky Lounge on the 65th floor to make your KOMTAR trip extra special.

Penang House of Music

Another new attraction that pulls in crowd from all walks of life is the Penang House of Music. Traverse a time tunnel from the 1940s to 1970s to enrich your knowledge of the art scene and musical heritage of Penang. Seniman Agung Tan Sri P. Ramlee and Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Nawab are among the household names that make Penang proud. For the newer generations, this is possibly the best place to enlighten yourselves on Bangsawan, Boria, Ronggeng, Puppet theatre, Chinese Opera, Dondang Sayang, Pop Yeh Yeh, Talentimes and dance crazes of that era. The Radio Room exhibits are eye-poppers that give you an irresistible impulse to bring them all home! Well researched, archived and presented in an honest way to showcase a rich local history, Penang House of Music is strategically located at level 4 of KOMTAR, which is barely 700m away the hotel.

Get up close and personal

History and heritage tour of Penang is a must. With just about 750m away from the hotel, you will surely leave your footprints in the epicentre of Georgetown’s historic site, which is made up of The Waterfront, Cultural Enclave, Business District, Leisure Zone and Enterprise Zone. Padang Kota Lama, Fort Cornwallis and Penang Street Art are part of the attraction. Plenty of photo opportunities around here.

Experience a different art scene of Penang at the historical Hin Bus Depot, which is about 600m away. Make your Penang trip wholesome with a visit to Chinatown, Little India, Chowrasta Market and Nagor Square, all within a 2-km reach.

Seaside thrills

For shopping within Georgetown, check out Prangin Mall, Gurney Paragon or Gurney Plaza. For atmospheric seaside F&B and sightseeing, chill yourself at Northam Beach Café and Gurney Drive.

Penang is packed with exciting events all year round. For February alone, there will be the Kek Lok Si Display of Lights (4 – 19 FEB 2019), Chinese New Year Celebration (5 – 6 FEB 2019), Penang Hot Air Ballon Fiesta 2019 (9 – 10 FEB 2019) and Hokkien New Year Celebration (12 FEB 2019). The Penang Tourism Calendar of Events is published here.

Choice of transport and street names to remember

Travelling around Penang is made easier with your preferred mode of transport, be it a rented car, SUV, van or bicycle. Remembering key street names such as Penang Road, Jalan Magazine, Jalan Dato Keramat, Jalan Macalister, Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong, Jalan Anson, Jalan Burma, Pengkalan Weld, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah and Gurney Drive will definitely make your trip more manageable. If you have the luxury of a local friend to show you around during your visit, that’s priceless!

Location matters

Penang Global Tourism and Tourism Penang are two very helpful references to plan your trip. Again, staying at a convenient place makes a lot of difference to your trip.

Is it time for you to upgrade to a bigger and better home?

Is it time for you to upgrade to a bigger and better home?

Craving for more space? Pictures courtesy of MRCB

As one’s lifestyle and work functions change, there will come a time where homeowners are faced with the question of moving into a bigger home.

The dream home you once thought was perfect may change over the years as your needs evolve.

Here are six signs it is time to switch to a larger home.

1. Your family is growing

Have your children outgrown their bunk beds and want a room of their own? Picture by MRCB

Multiplying family members is the most obvious reason to move to a bigger home.

Be it parents with teenagers who are outgrowing their bunk beds and need a room of their own or couples planning to welcome a bundle of joy, space becomes a priority.

For many families in Asia, it’s common for ageing parents to move in with their children and if the occasion arises, the possibility of an upsize simply cannot be ignored.

2. You need more space

Additional space requirements usually calls for an upgrade. Pictures from MRCB

Let’s face it, the Marie Kondo downsizing method is not everyone’s cup of tea. Sometimes, your lifestyle and hobbies just require more room.

It could be any reason: a large walk-in wardrobe for the fashion conscious, a gourmet kitchen for those who enjoy cooking up a storm, a room to store workout equipment for the Olympian in you or even a home large enough for your beloved four-legged furry family member to roam around.

3. You want a more secure neighbourhood

Want your kids to have fun but worry about their safety because you can’t watch over them? On top of ample play areas and fun amenities, rest easy knowing you can keep your children within sight and within reach with Alstonia’s security systems.

The gated and guarded residence is equipped with multi-tier security features including access card, CCTV surveillance, panic button and an intercom system.

4. Your status has elevated

Over time, your income will grow and allow for a home that’s bigger and better. Picture by Pixabay

Whether it’s a hard-earned promotion that got you a significant pay bump or coming into an inheritance, you may find yourself in the financial position to upgrade to a more spacious home.

Always wanted to live resort-style property but couldn’t justify taking out another mortgage? This could be the right time.

5. You love entertaining guests

A larger living room is perfect for those who love having guests over.

If open houses and large family dinners are your thing, any host would appreciate and understand the need for adequate dining space and mingling areas.

The extra rooms will also come in handy for homeowners to put up guests and family members visiting from abroad.

6. You work from home

A bigger space allows for comfortable room for your home office. Picture by MRCB

As companies allow employees more flexibility with their work hours and the option of working remotely, a home office is the way to go.

Should you ever decide to take the self-employed route to start your own business, converting one of the extra rooms in your large property saves you the rental costs of an office.

What to consider before upsizing

Location is without a doubt the biggest and most important factor. Bigger homes tend to be situated away from the hustle and bustle of the city which is a wonderful thing if tranquillity is what you’re after and there is still room for resale value to make sure the investment will be a fruitful one.

Before you decide to upgrading to a bigger home, be sure to ask yourself if you’re prepared to exert extra elbow grease to upkeep a home with a larger square footage.

Alstonia Hilltop Homes provides exclusivity and privacy in a resort setting.

Alstonia Hilltop Homes is a private and exclusive residential in Bukit Rahman Putra, Sungai Buloh offers a resort lifestyle living concept with 20,000 square feet of facilities deck and promises a practical and spacious layout, perfect for those looking to upsize to a bigger home.

If you’re moving to a larger home because of a growing brood, this freehold, gated and guarded development with multi-tier security has the conveniences of a mature township such as educational institutions, medical centres, as well as banks other services.

Alstonia is located close to several prestigious schools including international, government and Chinese schools. There’s a college and university in the development’s surrounding areas and private and government hospitals nearby.

This super low-density development only has 31 units of three-storey Garden Villas and 214 units of Garden Heights condominiums, offering a sense of privacy coupled with its linear parks, recreational facilities and well-designed amenities.

Think moving into a bigger home means moving away from the city?

You don’t have to compromise on accessibility as Bukit Rahman Putra is a mature township that is close to Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam via four major highways near the development which are Duke Highway, NKVE, LDP and Guthrie Corridor Expressway.

There’s also an MRT feeder bus to transport commuters to the Sg Buloh MRT station.

If you’re considering an upgrade, why not drop by Alstonia’s show units to have a feel of the property?

Free $$$ with IOI Livo Referral Programme!

Free $$$ with IOI Livo Referral Programme!

There’s no reason to say no to free money when all you have to do to get it is have a person quote your name and mobile number to another person. Sound hard? Pfft, just bring them along to any IOI Galleria and they will most definitely use your name and mobile number. It’s so easy! Once these 2 details are given to a Sales Consultant in the Gallery, you just have to kick back, relax, and let them take it from there. The most work you have to do is registering to be a referrer in the program. Even that takes less than 5 minutes.

What exactly is the referral programme? Basically, you refer anyone you like, ideally people that are interested in buying property, to these guys. Then, they give you money when they make a sale through that referral. Simple!

Interested? Here’s the link: www.ioiproperties.com.my/referral

Still not interested?
Read on, it only gets better – I promise.

Not only is this programme open to everyone, every successful referral increases the amount of money you make. The best part? You can have as many referrals as you want- there’s no limit!

You might be thinking there’s something shady going on here- “why are these guys giving away money for free? What’s the catch?”. It’s simple, the more people you refer to them, the larger their sales network grows. What we have here is a situation in which IOI Properties Group have created an environment where you and them both benefit- you benefit by the monetary incentives they give you for a successful referral, and they benefit because you’ve helped them grow their network. How can you say no?

Since November last year, this referral programme has enjoyed a bountiful response of more than 1000 registrations. The rewards for a single participant have reached up to RM 36,022. That’s not a maximum, you can actually earn more! It gets better, check this out: “How easy was it to introduce a referral?” – when asked this, participants responded with an outstanding 4 out 5 stars.

If this isn’t enough to pique your interest, fine! Did you want more reasons to work with IOI Properties? Sure! IOI Properties also introduced the Wheel of Fortune at all of its IOI Gallerias across Klang Valley to give you guys more reasons to celebrate Chinese New Year. With a spin of the wheel, customers can enjoy up to 1.5% in discounts for selected projects.

You can’t not be interested at this point.

“I hope that more of our purchasers and those who are keen to earn some extra income will take part in the IOI LiVO Referral Programme and refer their friends to us.” – IOI Properties Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Jason Tie.

About the Book

The People’s Victory is the first book published to tell the epic story of how Malaysians took responsibility for their country and struggled against the odds to change their government.

Throughly researched, it is an important document of a historic phenomenon.

The book’s narrative begins from the outcome of the 13th general election (GE13) in 2013 and then moves through five years of drama, surprises, ironies and twists to the climactic 14th general election of May 9, 2018.

It grows from despair to hope to euphoria. It covers the Black 505 rallies after GE13; the infamous Kajang Move; the Barisan Nasional (BN) regime’s unrelenting persecution of political opponents and activists with the use of draconian laws; the break-up of the original Opposition pact called Pakatan Rakyat; the exposure of the 1MDB scandal; and it builds up to the final showdown between the newly reconstituted Opposition coalition renamed Pakatan Harapan (PH) and the BN juggernaut.

More than just tell the story of the battle for Putrajaya, the book pays tribute to the hard work put in by ordinary Malaysians to help the PH battalion headed by Mahathir Mohamad, Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Guan Eng and Mohamad Sabu succeed.

It salutes the brave citizens who carried on defying the corrupt and oppressive BN regime despite facing severe persecution. People like cartoonist Zunar, Mejar Zaidi Ahmad, graphic designer Fahmi Reza, Malaysiakini’s Steven Gan and Premesh Chandran, activist Maria Chin Abdullah, etc.

The book states categorically that the outcome on May 9 “was not just Mahathir’s victory, or Anwar’s, or Kit Siang’s, or Mat Sabu’s, or Guan Eng’s. This was a victory of the people. A victory of the Malaysian people.”

The People’s Victory is a book of the people, for the people.

Responses to the Book

Wong Ming Yook in a review for Malaysiakini:

Kee’s carefully researched book traces the entire story of how things came to a head with the Pakatan Harapan victory that Malaysians hoped would reset the entire direction and narrative of Malaysia. Six months down the road, reading The People’s Victory evokes much of the earnestness and tension we experienced in the years leading up to May 9. It brings back memories of the intervening years between GE13 and GE14, and delivers a well-documented and informed narrative of all the key events that pushed Malaysians to vote as they did on that historic May 9.
… We put the book down with a happy sigh, gratified by the catharsis that The People’s Victory has provided. … Writing the book was a mammoth task, Kee acknowledges. But he dealt with large, complex political and social issues that galvanised Malaysians towards epic change in 2018, and did it in a way that was comprehensive, careful, yet engagingly conversational, personal and immediate. He told a story and he told it very well.

Bissme S. in the news daily theSun:

In my opinion, this is possibly the best book that Kee has written in his career. … The book reads like a film script, with the story laid out in three acts. … The best thing about it is the entertaining and uncomplicated manner in which he tells the story.

Blogger-activist Mariam Mokhtar on YouTube recommending The People’s Victory for a Christmas present:

The book is on the bestseller’s list. Great! Savour a piece of history which WE helped to create. Even Santa would be delighted to have this book.

Martin Vengadesan in The Star Online:

The People’s Victory … is a vibrant account of the days leading to Malaysia’s historic change of federal government.

Loshni Nair on Twitter:

The book … brings to light how the people rose against all odds, and it brings to light, Hope. … Countless voices were silenced, under ISA. Under the Sedition Act. Students were detained, people lost their jobs. Still, they fought. So will I. A quote by Dylan Thomas comes to mind, “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” I will continue raging … and I will fight. … Thank you, Kee Thuan Chye. For returning my rage, and with that, my hope.

Why Kee Thuan Chye wrote the Book

May 9 was an important moment to record. It happened because of the spirit and determination of the Malaysian people. They deserve to be recognised for their struggle.

I wrote this book to make Malaysians feel proud of themselves. This book will always remind them of that happened on May 9, and what they did to make it happen.

In years to come, they can share the moment with their children and grandchildren. The book is a souvenir of that historic moment.

The generations that come later can read it and discover what Malaysians had to put up with under a corrupt and oppressive government and perhaps learn from it so that they can take measures to prevent such a government from arising again in this country.

I wrote the book to remind Malaysians that we the people have the power to remove a government that is not fit to rule. We must, however, be constantly vigilant and keep the government of the day on its toes and point out its wrongdoings.

I hope the book will inspire Malaysians to keep fighting. For it is only from continuing to fight the good fight that we can achieve a better Malaysia.

As such, BookXcess’ goal is to make reading popular again; for books to become a household item that everyone can afford,” shared Andrew Yap, Founder of BookXcess Sdn. Bhd.

Taking up the entire 7th floor and part of the 8th floor, covering 26,000 sq. ft, BookXcess Gurney Paragon Mall features a children’s section which offers a breath-taking view of the ocean, providing inspiration for young readers to spark their curious minds. The bookstore also features comfortable reading spaces for customers to browse the sample books available. In addition, customers can also visit Café Wolf, BookXcess’ very own in-store café for refreshments or a quick bite.

According to Hunza Group Executive Director, Ms. Khor Tze Ming, “Shoppers nowadays enjoy getting lost in a cosy feeling of peace and quiet where books have their back amidst the crazy buzz of a busy mall. The establishment of BookXcess is a great complement to the mushrooming of international schools in Penang, which is in line with the state government’s vision in transforming our state into an international city with high-income economy that is knowledge-intensive.”

BookXcess Gurney Paragon Mall is also Red Readerhood’s first long-term initiative in Penang. Started in 2011, Red Readerhood gives back to communities by working together with local organisations to give books to those in need. Customers can purchase and donate a book at the Red Readerhood corner, and for every book a customer donates, BookXcess will match it with another book.
